Rene Maxwell grew up poor in Portland, running the streets barefoot with her five brothers and sisters. Because their mom was bedridden with polio and her dad absent, the family often had nothing, not even toothpaste. “We were wild,” she says. “We were in crisis.” But at Sister Visitor Center, Rene “felt a love like I had never felt before.” Watch Rene’s story here.

When Pete Glauber’s beloved wife Mary Jane became terminally ill early in the pandemic, our team of advocates worked with her nursing home to get Pete and their adult children in to be with her in the days before her death. “It was so important that we be there,” he said. “I don’t know what we would have done without your help.”
