As the oldest of eight children, including seven younger sisters, Shaiq felt an enormous responsibility to protect his family. When his village was overtaken by the Taliban, they lived in constant fear. His brother, a translator for the U.S. Army, was granted a special visa—but because of age restrictions, Shaiq had to make the journey to the U.S. alone.

"I was scared I’d never see my family again," he shared.

When Shaiq applied for asylum, he was connected with Rebecca Sim, director of Catholic Charities’ Immigration Legal Services program. A nationally recognized immigration attorney, Rebecca helped guide Shaiq step by step through the green card process. It wasn’t just paperwork—it was a lifeline. Along the way, ILS also provided housing and rental assistance, ensuring Shaiq had the stability to pursue work and education.

Today, Shaiq works full-time at a GE factory, supports his family back home, and is learning to code. With his green card in hand, his dream has taken root—and his destiny is unfolding. “Be patient,” he says. “Good communication makes the impossible possible.”

The ILS program was there when Shaiq needed someone most—not just to navigate a complex legal system, but to restore hope. Thanks to ILS, he is one step closer to reuniting with his family in a place of safety, dignity, and peace.
