Six years ago, a 16-year-old and her 8-month old child left Guatemala to join family here in Kentucky. She was fleeing a lifetime of persecution based on, among other things, being a Catholic indigenous Guatemalan woman. ILS assisted her in seeking asylum, as a defense to deportation. Nearly six years after arriving in the United States and after a trial that spanned 5 separate hearings and a total of 15 hours, the immigration judge approved her application for asylum on June 30, and now she and her son may look forward to a life of safety, security, and opportunities in the United States.
