Bakhita Empowerment Initiative recently offered its first human trafficking prevention class for young women who are new arrivals to the U.S., and for coordinator Tamar Israel, it was a dream come true. “This population is so at risk because of the challenges they face while being new to America,” Tamar explains. “I sat in trainings and learned how at-risk they are but felt unable to reach them.”
The group met for six days in a row. Presenters spoke in English and participants received interpretation via headsets from interpreters speaking Spanish, Swahili, Kinyarwanda, or Dari. “I have a passion for this population,” Tamar says. “This made me want to keep going.”
