Closed hotline fund becomes a ‘lifeline’

By Ruby Thomas, Record Staff Writer
Though the Opportunities for Life Hotline closed a year ago, help for some women facing an unplanned pregnancy may still be a phone call away.

The statewide hotline — created by the four bishops of Kentucky in the 1980s — closed at the end of 2018, a casualty of changing times and technology. But the January Opportunities for Life Collection, which funded the hotline each year, will continue to support mothers who need help.

“We’ve decided to […]

Share the Journey – Making room at the inn

I was in a meeting around this time last year when I was hit by a barrage of communications from my staff, all with the same message: There’s a Haitian family in our Fourth Street lobby, and they’re lost. Several ministries of Catholic Charities of Louisville provide clothing and toys to families they serve during the Christmas season.

Parish groups and individuals are invited to help fulfill that mission.

As Thanksgiving approaches, I am once again excited to watch newly-arrived refugee families experience the holiday for the first time. While it may be a new tradition for many of them, the idea of coming together to share a meal is familiar. It gives us all the opportunity to express our gratitude and build community. Read more.

Share the journey – Sister Visitor Center is a source of hope for those in need

Fifty years ago, when I was a child growing up in St. Louis, I never could have imagined the path that lay ahead. At the time, I was a carefree 13-year-old, and although my family lived modestly to make ends meet, I had everything I needed: a comfortable home, food on the table, books for school. Read more.
