The Sisters of Charity of Nazareth have awarded our Immigration Legal Services with a grant of $60,000 to continue to provide low-cost and sometimes no-cost legal services to immigrants and refugees.
ILS opens approximately 1,300 new cases a year while continuing to serve clients in previously opened cases. It typically takes two to six years, for example, to gain many visas or a particular legal status. Last year, ILS opened 1,292 new cases and served 2,735 clients, 35 to 40 percent of whom qualified to receive legal representation at little to no cost. The average age of those served is between 35 and 45. Fifty-one percent identify as female, and 49 percent as male. Nationalities represented are Mexico 28 percent; Democratic Republic of Congo 23 percent; Honduras 11 percent; Cuba 7 percent; El Salvador 6 percent; Guatemala 6 percent; Somalia 1 percent; 26 other countries 18 percent.
Congratulations, ILS!
