The mission of the LS program is to promote equality, provide education and celebrate diversity as we work to empower and accompany the LEP population.
Catholic Charities of Louisville has been a locally based provider of language support to our community for over 25 years. By providing job training for bilingual individuals, we supply the community with the interpreter services necessary for LEP clients to gain equal access to healthcare and other essential services. The Language Services Program aligns closely with CCL’s vision to welcome, strengthen, and empower and the agency’s mission to help people in need.

A few years ago, we received an urgent interpreting request from a hospital. There was an elderly woman who suffered from a severe stroke. Therefore, she was not mobile and had difficulty speaking. A part of her medical care included extensive therapies as well as a month-long interpreting commitment— from Monday-Friday, 9am-4pm. LS helped coordinate her language services’ needs, so language would not be a barrier for her to receive the best care. After month-long therapies, including occupational, physical and speech therapies, she was able to make big improvements with her speech and regained partial mobility. Since then, she has made a full recovery due to her strength and dedication as well as all the medical professionals involved in her care. Language access plays a vital role in patients’ health and wellbeing.

St. Benezet’s dedication and powers of persuasion made building the bridge possible. He probably had to draw on talents he didn’t know he had. Many of our interpreters never recognized their own gifts until coming to work with us. Our interpreters do so much more than facilitate conversation. They build bridges. Bridges that unite thousands of people. Bridges that transform individuals into communities. Bridges that enlighten and educate. Bridges of equity, and justice. Bridges of compassion and peace. What our program provides is so much more than translation.
