Looking for a stove … and maybe an apartment?

The wonderful team with Bakhita Empowerment Initiative is looking for a stove and oven to complete the apartment kitchen for a person exiting human trafficking. If you have a stove in good working condition, or know someone who does, please email Toni at aflores@archlou.org to donate.

Also, we often provide housing for those exiting human trafficking. Do you own rental property? Know someone who does? We would love to find someone to help us with discounted rent rates or even […]

Pin the tail on the donkey … with a twist!

Last week in classes with Madison McMullen, students working on their English were learning direction words like up, down, left, and right. They had a great time practicing these by shouting direction words to help a student pin the tail on the donkey. Watch the video below!

Common Earth Gardens builds raised beds

Common Earth Gardens staff recently built raised beds for a family involved in our In-Home Garden Project. With the project, newly arrived refugee families who would like to farm their own culturally important foods receive raised beds at their homes. This is one way of equipping them to thrive in Louisville, especially when there is a waiting list for garden plots at our many community gardens. Thanks, Common Earth Gardens team, for welcoming so well!

Volunteers give spring breaks helping CCL

Volunteers from three universities gave their spring breaks in service to Catholic Charities of Louisville recently. You’ve probably seen these groups from–in order of pictures–Virginia Tech University, James Madison University, and St. John Fisher University. They were everywhere doing everything from helping to set up apartments, organizing the donation room, serving food at pantries, clearing garden plots with Common Earth Gardens, and helping to build beds with Sleep in Heavenly Peace, a ministry that CCL supports with workshop space where […]

You, too, can be a mentor to young people

Youth mentors get the fun job of helping students explore their interests and learn how those interests can become careers! Youth Mentor Erin had the idea to bring her animal-loving mentees to the Cat Café last month, as one of her mentees is interested in pursuing a career as a veterinarian someday. Great idea Erin! For more information on mentoring, contact Rachel at rvandyke@archlou.org.

We need furniture for refugee apartments

Over the next two months we will receive an unusually high number of refugee families from many countries. That means we will furnish and prepare 60 to 70 apartments! We’d love to have your help with furniture … couches, end tables, dressers, kitchen tables and chairs, etc. If you want to make a tangible difference for families building new lives in Louisville, please email Toni at aflores@archlou.org to schedule a furniture pick-up. God bless you for your kindness.

Man gets help with bills, is self-sufficient again

Mr. Perry had been without utilities for three months by the time he came to Sister Visitor Center for help. In his 70s and disabled due to severe arthritis in his legs, he fell behind when his sister, with whom he shared a duplex, became ill and was moved to a nursing home, leaving him with all of the rent and utilities.

“How in the world have you been surviving?” Case Manager Audrey Penman asked him. He told her he was […]
