You can change lives as an ESL instructor

This is a fascinating adventure. The room is buzzing with people speaking Kinyarwanda, Kiswahili, Spanish, Arabic, Pashto, and Dari. They sit in small groups or huddle over computers, all learning to speak English from a teacher who speaks none of their languages. How in the world does that work? We’d love for you to find out. We need LOTS of volunteer English as Second Language (ESL) instructors. We will train you and […]

Caryll Houselander

Mystic (b.1901–d.1954)

Caryll Houselander, an English laywoman, had a definite sense of her vocation: to awaken others to the presence of Christ in the world. This conviction was implanted from her childhood by a series of mystical experiences that continued throughout her life. The most striking of these experiences occurred one day in her adulthood, while she stood on a crowded train in London. As she looked at the […]

ILS helps Afghan woman win asylee status

Rabia is 24 years old and college educated. Her brother was part of the Afghan National Army (he fled to Iran), and her sister and her sister’s husband worked with NATO (fled to Germany), both associations also placing her at risk. And finally, she is Hazara and fears harm by the Taliban because of their historical persecution of her ethnic group. She was evacuated, with her older sister who worked on USAID projects, to the United States on September 2, […]

You meet saints, holy people, everywhere

Annalena Tonelli–Servant of the Poor (1943–2003)

Annalena Tonelli studied to become a lawyer in her native Italy. But from an early age, she felt a deep calling to serve “the poor, the suffering, the abandoned, the unloved.” In 1969 she moved to northern Kenya to the town of Wajir. There, among a population of mostly ethnic Somalis, she taught school and later trained […]
