Scared and nowhere to go, man finds hope

He was just two days out of prison. He had been put on a bus to Louisville even though he wasn’t from Kentucky and had never been to the city before. When he arrived downtown at 2 a.m. he had only the clothes he had worn into prison. He was cold, he was hungry, and he didn’t know what to do. But when a caseworker from Sister Visitor Center met him at a shelter, she helped him get a bed […]

Another Give for Good in the books, successful

Thanks to 74 donors, Catholic Charities of Louisville raised $40,280 during Give for Good yesterday. Many thanks to those team members who donated and who encouraged others to do so.

Give for Good is Louisville’s single biggest day of fundraising for local nonprofits. The entire day raised nearly $8 million dollars for agencies like ours. The top earner was Metro United Way at $280,320; the lowest we won’t name, but suffice to say that out of 556 agencies participating, seven received […]

It’s suicide prevention month; call 988 for help

Enough people to fill the KFC Yum! Center TWICE. That’s how many people in American completed suicide in 2020 (more than 45,000). And another million Americans attempted it but were saved.
Someone in America completes suicide every 11 minutes every day. But we can help lower that number.

New Covid levels in metro mean new guidelines

Jefferson County’s Covid-19 classification has improved to Medium/ “Yellow. While limitations on certain mask requirements and indoor in-person gatherings have been eased, we do believe it is important to remind you of steps you can take to keep everyone safe.

Celebrating Frederic Ozanam…but why?

Last Thursday, the church, throughout the world, remembered especially, Blessed Frederic Ozanam, the Founder of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. (1813–1853)

“France in the 19th century was rent by the continuing reverberations of the Revolution. The Church hierarchy allied itself with the conservative cause, incurring the distrust of the working class and the disdain of those intellectuals who embraced the republican spirit of liberty. One man who tried to bridge […]

Mary Jo Burke is looking for big checkbooks

If Mary Jo Burke had her way, a few friends of hers “with big checkbooks” would underwrite the good work being done at Sister Visitor Center. The problem with that wish, Mary Jo says with a laugh, is that “I don’t know any big, influential people.”

Still, that doesn’t keep her from recruiting donors and volunteers for Sister Visitor Center, the west Louisville outreach of Catholic Charities of Louisville since 1969. Mary Jo […]

SVC gets outdoor turf, eating and break area

The Motz Group out of Cincinnati has made larger installations, like the Cincinnati Bengals’ playing field in Paycor Stadium. But they’ve not made a larger impact than when they donated time and materials to install a turf lawn behind Sister Visitor Center, where staff can now enjoy meals and break times outside. Here are pictures of the installation and of the inaugural meal!
