Metro United Way grant puts us over $1 million

A $100,000 grant from Metro United Way to Catholic Charities this week put us over the $1 million mark in grants earned in fiscal year 2022. As far as we can tell, this is the most grant money ever awarded to Catholic Charities in one year. Congratulations and a hearty thank you to everyone who has contributed to the many, many applications submitted this year. Great job!

Bakhita team trains other professionals in HT 101

Amy Nace-DeGonda and Marissa Castellanos provided a full day Train the Trainer “Human Trafficking 101: An Overview” to staff at Family and Children’s Place, the local children’s advocacy center. Ten  staff participated in the training, where we discussed definitions and terminology, vulnerable populations, Kentucky state law, Kentucky-specific data, and specialized services. Common Table info session nextweek

Know someone who needs some help with finding employment? Encourage them to attend the next information session at Common Table to learn about our 8-week culinary arts training program. Not only will participants pick up skills, they will be eligible to earn 8 credit hours from Jefferson Community Technical College, continue on to other apprenticeships, or get help finding a job.

Another Afghan receives asylum status

Amir Hussein on WAVE television

Our very own Amir Hussein hit the air waves this week when he appeared on WAVE Country, a live local show. Amir talked about Common Earth Gardens, shared about farmers markets, and showed off some early produce from his family’s farm. Amir and his family moved to Kentucky years ago just to participate in the program that became Common Earth Gardens. Now we works promoting CEG farmers at farmers markets … while still farming with his family. Great job, Amir!

First Afghan families gain asylum status

Two families from Afghanistan are the first to gain asylum status through the work of our Immigration Legal Services team. Asylum status assures their right to remain in the United States.

We want to share their stories but cannot share their names  because of the danger still posed by the Taliban to them and their families still in Afghanistan.
