Caring for the dead is a way to respect and honor life

It seems like a paradox to write about burying the dead in a column meant to focus on Respect Life Month. But the truth is, providing indigent burial to those who die without family or resources is a final act of bestowing dignity and respecting life. And it is changing the way I live my own life.

As director of Catholic Charities of Louisville’s Indigent Burial Program, I have facilitated 270 burials and cremations since July 2021. Our program, funded by […]

Man gets help with bills, is self-sufficient again

Mr. Perry had been without utilities for three months by the time he came to Sister Visitor Center for help. In his 70s and disabled due to severe arthritis in his legs, he fell behind when his sister, with whom he shared a duplex, became ill and was moved to a nursing home, leaving him with all of the rent and utilities.

“How in the world have you been surviving?” Case Manager Audrey Penman asked him. He told her he was […]

Sr. Paris shares journey of faith, childhood miracle

As a young person, I attended Catholic school, went to Mass every Sunday, and said my prayers.  In 7th grade, I transitioned to public schools, where I first became aware of racial diversity. In my circles of private school, church, and neighborhoods, I encountered other races, but always as a majority. Now, in the car with my dad on the first day of 7th grade, I did not see one white person […]

Mentoring matches have an emotional close a year later

New Horizons match Jimmy and Kevin just had an emotional closing meeting, as they reached the end of their one-year commitment!

“Because of him, I can speak English,” Kevin said.

Jimmy built a strong friendship not only with Kevin, but with Kevin’s entire family. Kevin’s parents shared they are so grateful for the improvement they’ve seen in their son’s confidence, self-esteem, and mental health in the past year.

Jimmy shared the most […]

Team member loves hearing all the languages

Although Rachel Van Dyke loves to cook with her husband, she’s quick to point out that he is “without a doubt the more skilled cook” and she is happy to be his sous chef and wash the dishes. In the cold, dreary days of December, they’re crafting a lot of curries, braises, and stews, and, of course, ramping up their holiday baking.

Rachel, who connects mentors with young people with Migration and Refugee […]

Mary Jo Burke is looking for big checkbooks

If Mary Jo Burke had her way, a few friends of hers “with big checkbooks” would underwrite the good work being done at Sister Visitor Center. The problem with that wish, Mary Jo says with a laugh, is that “I don’t know any big, influential people.”

Still, that doesn’t keep her from recruiting donors and volunteers for Sister Visitor Center, the west Louisville outreach of Catholic Charities of Louisville since 1969. Mary Jo […]

Fully stocked pantry shelves are a miracle

When Deacon Andy Heinsohn locked the doors of the Father Jack Jones Food Pantry that Thursday, he did not know what he would do when the pantry opened again the following Wednesday. Now serving as many as 100 visitors a day, the food pantry had only peanut butter and mandarin oranges in stock. He knew he would receive some food from Dare to Care on Tuesday, but it was scheduled to be a […]
